Rusty Johnson - Artist
Rusty is an Australian Artist living in Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula.
He trained at RMIT majoring in printmaking and was fortunate enough the study Printmaking under artists such as George Baldisson, Les Kossatz, Tate Adams and Grahame King. After completing RMIT he went on to complete a Diploma of Education and spent the next 20 years teaching Secondary Art.
After becoming frustrated with that and getting the urge to become creative Rusty entered the world of fireworks. In this industry he was able to allow his artistic side flourish once again by designing fireworks works displays in Australia and around the world. He has won awards at some of the world’s biggest Fireworks competitions for his display designs and programming.
Rusty has recently returned to his arts background but instead of Printmaking he has developed his unique style of Explosive Art.
Using a range of black powders, fuses and coloured pigments he burns his water /beach themes onto canvas. This is a very aggressive process that like Printmaking requires a lot of confidence that the final product will turn out as expected. Rusty carefully combines his love of fireworks, the sea, and the local environment to create images that bound with movement, colour, and power
